Since 1952
The night the mill burned, and what came after
On a January night in 1951 the Cedar Hollow sawmill burned to the ground while the nearest engine came twenty miles over an icy road. Everyone in the Hollow stood in the snow and watched. By spring, thirty-one of them had signed a charter, and the next April a used 1946 pumper rolled into a borrowed garage on Mill Street.
Seventy-four years later the department is still every bit as volunteer. There are no hydrants outside the village, so the water rides with us. There is nobody sitting at the station, so the pagers go off in kitchens and barns and the back row of the school play. And about 340 times a year, somebody drops what they're doing and goes.

Halloween at the station
Fire Prevention Night, October 31
Bring the kids, see the trucks. From 5 to 8 p.m. the bay doors are open: climb on Engine 1, try the hose with a firefighter, pick up free smoke-alarm batteries and an escape-plan sheet, and finish with cider, doughnuts and trunk-or-treat in the back lot. Costumes welcome on both sides of the hose.
Leaf-burning season
Burn permits are required in the Hollow through May.
Leaves and brush only, in a pile you can step around, with a hose charged and someone watching until it is cold. No burning when the wind is up or the banner at the top of this page says so. Permits are free: call the station.

The district
Three communities, one department
The Town of Cedar Hollow, Hollow Township and Ridge Township: about 61 square miles of village, farms, woodlots and ridge roads, with the old quarry at one end and the mill pond at the other. Hydrants stop at the village line; everything beyond it is tanker country.
Mutual aid with Pine Run Volunteer Fire Company and Stony Creek Fire-Rescue. Station 1, Cedar Hollow Road at Mill Street.
